Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, E and beta carotene, when introduced in large doses, cause a reduction of these enzymes very rapidly. So antioxidants taken in higher than the so-called "RDA values" prevent the normal breakdown of muscle tissue which accompanies strenuous exercise, which is commonly known as the "anticatabolic effect."

Taking antioxidants regularly seems to indicate an increased ratio of testosterone vs. cortisol, the ideal effect for increasing lean muscle mass. Another positive side effect is improved capacity for protein synthesis and tissue regeneration following exercise.
